Since urinary tract infections are the second most common type of infection, most people have had a urinary tract infection or know someone who has had one. The fact that urinary tract infections are so commonplace makes them more susceptible to false information and myths. Dr. J. Kyle Mathews, a urogynecologist who treats women at his North Dallas urogynecology office, wants women to get the facts about this condition.
Four of the most widespread myths are:
This is a very harmful and hurtful myth that makes women feel bad about themselves if and when they contract urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTIs are simply caused by bacteria that get into any part of the urinary tract, but most commonly the bladder and urethra.
There is no evidence that cranberry juice can treat a UTI. If you suspect you have a UTI, you need to visit us at our North Dallas urogynecology office for diagnosis and treatment, usually with an oral antibiotic.
This is another myth that really scares women. Having recurrent bladder infections simply means that you should see a physician like our urogynecologist to determine what is causing the problem and whether or not you need a preventive antibiotic treatment program or another type of treatment.
Dr. Mathews suggests that you wash with water instead—never use antibacterial soap or any kind of regular soap because it’s too strong for the delicate skin in the vaginal area and may cause irritation. In addition, antibacterial soap does not prevent urinary tract infections in any way.
Urinary tract infections are very treatable, so women should not be scared or swayed by the myths that are swirling around this condition; instead, come to our North Dallas urogynecology office for compassionate care and treatment from our experienced and knowledgeable physician and his staff.
